Kitchen Storage That Actually Works

Kitchen storage fails because it is organised by cupboard rather than by task. Sort by what you do, and the space doubles.

Store by task, not by cupboard

Group items where they are used. Cooking oil, salt, and the pans live together. Coffee and cups live together. This sounds obvious, but most kitchens are arranged by what fitted where on moving day.

Once the zones are set, note where you have to walk more than two steps mid-task. That is the storage to change first.

Use the vertical space you already own

Vertical storage is cheap and reversible. If the arrangement is on open shelves, keep it visually quiet — see styling open shelves.

Keep the worktop clear on purpose

Aim to leave at least 60 cm of uninterrupted worktop next to the hob. Everything that lives on the counter permanently should earn its place: kettle, coffee, knife block, one board.

Appliances used less than weekly go into a cupboard, even if it is awkward. Visible clutter is what makes a kitchen feel like work — the same logic that keeps a small living room from feeling cramped.

Remove before you buy containers

Empty every cupboard, put like with like, and count. Most kitchens hold duplicates: three peelers, two identical pans, a spare set of everything. Donate the duplicates before buying a single container.

Then buy containers sized to the shelf, not to the food. Square and stackable beats round. Keep it consistent so the cupboard stays legible after a busy week.

Editor’s note

Measurements, product availability, and prices change. Check current details before ordering, and measure your own space rather than trusting a standard size.
