How to Build a Calm Bedroom in a Small Space

A calm bedroom is not about a style. It is about removing decisions, light sources, and clutter from the last hour of the day.

  4. Keep the palette quiet and the texture warm

Put the bed where you can see the door

In most rooms this is the wall opposite or diagonal to the door. It leaves the widest floor area free and means you are not sleeping with your head under a window, which is the coldest and draughtiest place in the room.

Leave at least 60 cm on the side you get out of, or 75 cm if there are two of you. If the bed barely fits, consider a bed with storage underneath rather than a second piece of furniture.

Hide storage, show nothing

Drawers under the bed hold bedding and out-of-season clothes, which is the largest volume of clutter in a bedroom. Everything else goes in closed storage: a wardrobe with doors, not open shelving.

If you must use open storage, keep only one surface and one visible object type. The rules for making open shelves work are in styling open shelves.

Two lamps, one dimmer, no ceiling glare

Bedside lamps should be at mattress height or a little above, with the shade at eye level when you are sitting up. Put them on separate switches if two people read at different times.

Avoid spotlights aimed at the bed. If the ceiling light is unavoidable, dim it hard in the evening and let the lamps do the work — the same logic as layered lighting.

Keep the palette quiet and the texture warm

Two or three related colours, one of them light, is enough. Add interest through texture: a wool throw, a linen headboard, a cotton rug. Texture reads as calm; pattern reads as activity.

Curtains should close fully and reach the floor. Blackout lining is worth it if you wake with the sun. How these colours hold up over years is covered in choosing paint colours that last.
